Birmingham 2022 Opening Ceremony – Animation of The Bull

Gapp were recently approached by Artem Ltd - Special Effects creators for film and TV - to supply animation technologies for their 10m high Bull – star of the Opening Ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Due to the size and mass of the beast (10m high x 4.5m wide x 15m long and weighing in at only 2.5 tonnes), Artem used a telehandler to drive the Bull around the arena, but required an animation solution to make the Bull walk, kneel, paw at the ground and rear up. Furthermore, when it walked its legs also had to move in time with the movement of the telehandler. Delta’s high performance A2 servos were chosen in combination with the Trio Motion MC6N motion controller and Sesame planetary gearboxes to provide the motion of the limbs.

Artem collaborated with Automation Software Technology to develop the control and motion that would handle the sequences and synchronised movement of all 16 axes.

The Bull was a critical narrative element of the Opening Ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and was subsequently moved to Birmingham’s Centenary Square, where technicians animated it at regular intervals for crowds of visitors. It is hoped that a permanent home will be found for it in Birmingham.
